Vasse Felix Heytesbury Chardonnay

Variety: Chardonnay
Region: Margaret River , WA
Vintage: 2019

Bright pale deep straw. Fine perfumes of floral talc, pink grapefruit, lime blossom and lemongrass tea mingle with exciting savoury limestone and oyster shell complexities reminiscent of the coast. Intriguing notes of classic flint, struck match, candlewax and fresh white leather round out this captivating aroma. A strong central line of acidity holds tension in this juicy body of fruit, supported by incredible phenolic powder. Nervy and taut, the pithy feel of flinty stone, lime and pink grapefruit continue to give breath to the long Heytesbury finish. 7 years (fresh), 7+ years for complex, aged Chardonnay

French Oak Barrique, 61% new, 39% 1-4 year old, 9 months

97 Points , The Real Review - Huon Hooke

Light, bright yellow hue. Smoky oak and reductive notes add a patina to the bouquet which is more complex as a result. Grapefruit rocketing through on the palate, which is taut and refined, focused and long. Great precision here. Grapefruit comes up more and more on the nose (Gingin clone?), while the palate is impressively intense, refined, subtly concentrated and extremely long-lasting. A great chardonnay with a very bright future ahead of it.

Best Wine to Cellar , Gourmet Traveller Wine - Peter Bourne

Virginia Willicock is not resting on her laurels but continuing to refine her Vasse Felix wines with the 2019 Heytesbury her latest truimph. The oak is present, as are creamy MLF characters, but shining through is pure chardonnay fruit. Honeysuckle, white nectarine and pink grapefruit flavours abound, with savoury elements restraining any excess. The finish is long fine and seemingly endless. Pair with a WA rock lobster for instant pleasure or cellar for a decade for delayed gratification.

98 Points , Ray Jordan - West Australian

Shows the influence of the cool vintage. Refined and elegantly crafted chardie. Has more new oak than the standard chardie, but the power and intensity of the fruit handles it easily to maintain balance without a hint of excessiveness. Only natural yeasts are used and it gets nine months in oak with some battonage. Has a slightly charry character that augments the grapefruit and pear characters with a distinct savoury edge on the palate. Long and defined palate. One of the finest yet under this label.
