Snake + Herring Tough Love Chardonnay

Variety: 100 % Chardonnay
Region: Margaret River , WA
Vintage: 2020

Chardonnay is the pinnacle of white wines in Margaret River and the class, finesse and its suitability to wild fermentation. Blackwood Valley is a diverse region inland of Margaret River and this vineyard is renowned for its powerful Dijon clone chardonnay. The Great Southern for its lean tight chardonnay, which adds fruit lift and length to the blend. Utilizing the Gin Gin clone unique to WA and the 4 Dijon clones (seductively named 76,95,96 and 277) imported in the 80’s. Hand and machine picked, whole bunch pressed where handpicked; whole solids juices and wild ferments; 100% barrel ferment in new (14%) and used puncheons; aged on lees for 9 months in tank and barrel. The 2020 season had light crops due to inclement weather at flowering. A warm January also led to a very early harvest which produced fruit with great intensity and line. The 2020 Tough Love is richer and more complex than previous vintages due to being 100% barrel fermented for the first time. Nectarine, almond meal and some beeswax and toasted nuts are balanced with fine natural acids and a long citrus finish.

Light to medium yellow, bright colour, with a toasty bread and roasted nut bouquet of considerable charm and complexity. It really fills the mouth with expansive flavour and richness, the complexities of flavour lingering long on the follow-through. A very tidy chardonnay—the full orchestra is playing. And the price is an extra delight.

No shortage of flavour, that’s for sure. Peach, pineapple, cedar and cream characters come charging at you, though there’s plenty of frisky acidity in tandem. The finish feels a little splintery but it gets away with it. It’s a dry style, sunny, fresh, showy with oak, and ultimately convincing.
