Bass Phillip is named after George Bass and Arthur Phillip – men of great pioneering spirit, foresight and leadership during the nineteenth century. The Bass Phillip vineyards were first established, many years later, in the southeastern corner of Australia in 1979, specializing in high-quality Pinot Noir and chardonnay wines.Wine-making at Bass Phillip is uncompromising and driven by the respect for nature. The vineyards have been organic since 1993 and bio-dynamic since 2002.

Phillip Jones has been making wine in Gippsland since 1979. Though he makes his wine traditionally in a minimal intervention manner, this belies the level of perfectionism that has come to epitomize Bass Phillip's vineyard practices and wine making. From the original Estate vineyard;blended with the best fruit from Leongatha Vineyard. The exquisitely balanced single vineyard Estate Pinot Noir draws fruit from the extremely low cropping. After fermentation the wine is gravity racked into a combination of new (60%) and old French Alliers oak for a maturation period of around 15 to 18 months. The idiosyncratic, biodynamic and greatly admired Bass Phillip Premium Pinot Noir, aged in French Allier barriques for 18 months, is a defining Victorian pinot noir. Uplifting and memorable, this multi-layered and nuanced wine reflects a superb obsession, based on a low-cropping, four-hectare vineyard site at Leongatha. Black cherry, floral and game aromas, supple viscosity and underlying toasty oak. This wine is long in flavour, powerful & complex. Wine with attractive, rich fruits in the mid-palate, with the strength to improve many years in the cellar. Bottled without fining or filtration. Hugely promising wine, tremendously concentrated and ripely sumptuous. The 2019 wines are essentially Jones’s last vintage, and they’re a great suite of wines to go out with.
