Bass Phillip Estate Chardonnay

Variety: Chardonnay
Region: Gippsland , Victoria
Vintage: 2019

Bass Phillip is named after George Bass and Arthur Phillip – men of great pioneering spirit, foresight and leadership during the nineteenth century. The Bass Phillip vineyards were first established, many years later, in the southeastern corner of Australia in 1979, specialising in high-quality pinot noir and chardonnay wines.Wine-making at Bass Phillip is uncompromising and driven by the respect for nature. The vineyards have been organic since 1993 and biodynamic since 2002.

This is grown at Leongatha South, South Gippsland, Victoria. Bass Phillip uses close planting, extremely low cropping, no toxic chemicals, & natural wine making. This wine always has intensity, full natural acidity and great length. It will develop over the next eight years plus. Normally Estate chardonnay was matured in approximately 20% new oak. It has aromas of lifted citrus & stone fruit. Well balanced, vibrant fruit and great acid structure. Subtle notes of toasty oak underlay, creating a well rounded palate.

"Medium yellow colour with a faint brassy tinge, and the bouquet shows apricot and peach—more stone fruits than citrus—with a nutty, creamy, buttery background. There's a slight suspicion of botrytis. The palate is soft and round, gentle in acidity, with a medium-length finish, and there's a trace of tannin imparting 'chew'. The style of the wine is complex in a Burgundy-like way: a contrast to more fruit-focused Aussie chardonnays."  Huon Hooke
